On July 4th we took a trip to Naples and looked at the Herculanium with our archeologist friend Jan (yawn). This society was a cultural melting pot for ancient Rome. It has a similar history and fate as Pompeii. It was covered and preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius 2000 years ago. It was really amazing to experience it and hear all the archeological details.

That night we went to the Hard Rock cafe and had some greasy and delicious American food. We're not sure if the fireworks at the embassy happened or not because we were inside eating when it got dark.

So, last night was the finale. It was such a great kickoff to a fabulous trip. We had a multiple course dinner on a boat on the the Tiber river. We all sat outside, drank wine, mingled, ate, drank, mingled, ate, etc. Everyone shook their groove things at the end of the night then we came back to the apartments and partied until the sun came up. I got to sleep in for the first time too! It was delicious!

Everyone on this trip got along so well and I can safely say that we're all going home friends. One girl, Hillary, got into a scooter accident on our last 4 day weekend off. She's getting surgery today to get her jaw wired shut and they think her shoulder is fractured. Her experience is the one bad thing that happened other than me getting pick pocketed twice, but i'd pick that over broken bones anyday!

Re: Wait a second...
the second time was 2 nights after the first. This time they only got 10 euros so it wasn't as awful.
However, two days ago Kelly flushed my contacts down the sink. That's a pretty penny gone to the sewers of Greece :(
