I had this day on my calendar reserved for doing nothing.  So I
successfully, got the newspaper...read it on the patio...took a
shower...and at 10am I took the bus into town.  True to my nature when I
have time to pass...I like spending time in the grocery store. It was
my first destination.  What did I learn...Australians are mostly
Englishmen..many of the same products...but they have kangaroo meat.  I
was enamored with their spreads and cheese rolls....don't know why but
there were so many to choose from.  It's odd why I loved this...but some
things I can't explain. When all said and done I think I bought burger
flavored funion type rings...at first I had a gag reflex to this
snack...but after a while I started to like it.  Although, not enough to
finish the bag:-) I was moving on down the street and I wandered into
an olive oil store, gift shops, a cafe (where I bought a apple
struessel...ummm)...I then went to an internet cafe...31 flavors.  I
spent 60 minutes in there...catching up on e-mail.  Across the street
was a fish and chips place....and I had to have it at 2:30pm.  I love
fish and chips....this place was one of the best.  Now on food
overload...I was just walking to walk...and I remeber it was actually a
pretty warm day...so I was looking for places to stay cool.
Unfortunately, not many places were air conditioned.

It was now
4:30 and I was worn out....time to go back to the Sheraton and get some
beach time in.  Back at the room I got out the beach towel and
swimsuit.  Walking 500 yards...I was at the Sheraton pool.....which is
right next to the beach.  100 ft down a walkway at the pool take you to
the Port Douglas beach.  First reaction...it was a huge beach....but no
one was there.  I come to find out you can not swim in the ocean because
of jellyfish.  Hence, the huge pool right next to the beach....just
seemed like such a waste of a great beach...bummer.  I  found a spot
around the pool and decided to read the newspaper and listen to music.
For the next 30 minutes...just wandered off into lala land.  It was
probably 6:30pm and the sun was setting and quickly what was probably 85
degrees 5 hours earlier...was quickly becoming cold (60 degrees) and
windy.  I went back to my room and decided to watch whatever movie was
on HBO.  I took some notes about my trip and packed my stuff up for my
flight into Sydney the next day.

Overall, I would say that
Port Douglas could be skipped over...it was basically a vacation
destination that was conjured up...for no good reason.  GBR could be
seen from Cairns, Downtown was just OK.  Beaches can't go swimming.  Too
many tourists from the cruiseliners that port there.  I think if you
are looking for a classy vacation go to Noosa instead...much more to do
and see.
