What I did
Rode a picturesque route thro' rural Ohio
Hi Everyone!
A short blog tonight after an excellent meal in a small local restaurant (i.e. I drank too much wine).
96 miles today thro' Ohio on quiet and very picturesque small country roads. Just like Hampshire! Lots of woods and rivers, not much cultivation.
Still like a UK summer in that the weather is cold and overcast until early afternoon. The temperature was in the low 60s F until after midday. The Wills Wheelers would feel completely at home!
Wooster is a very pleasant small town and largely unspoilt since it was build in the early part of the last century. Unusually the hotel is just off the Main Street so after arriving we could walk straight out of the doors and throught the centre of town and have a decent coffee. This is unique for the Tour so far in that all the other hotels have been away from the centre of town as part of the strip development that surrounds almost all of the towns we have stayed in.
We went through Amish country and saw a few more of their characteristic horse drawn buggies and carts. All the road surfaces are marked by the shoes of the draft horses. The Amish don't believe that they should adopt anything that isn't in the Bible or was developed after the 17th Century. This does not extend to puting smoked glass in their buggies which seemed universal. They were all unfailingly friendly and waved and said hallo.
Why the Scopion Ride? Well, as I noted above, we mostly rode through pleasant, rolling country but after the second SAG stop, 26 miles from Wooster, we started on serious hills. Of the 5,000ft of ascent for the day's ride, about 3,500ft was in the last session. Great for working the fatigue out of our muscles even if our knees are feeling it a bit now.
Tomorrow another long ride of around 90 miles to Niles. The route is being amended even as I type to eliminate a section where the roads have broken up. We will get a final route brief either tomorrow before we start or at the first SAG. Flexibility is the key to bike Touring as well as air power!
Ride the Dream,
Chris and Penny
