We arrived in Krakow after a miserable night train with the heater broken on and 2 Finnish girls who wouldn't allow the window to be opened. After a long walk in the cold rain very early and then a too expensive cab ride, we arrived at a hostel that had room.

We slept a few hours and then found food. Everything looked better after a little sleep and Krakow is a beautiful city. Of course being here at Easter is special too. Everyone walks around with their beautiful easter baskets, a far cry from the Sav-on plastic variety back home. The food is good, the beer is better, and the weather seems to be warming up a bit.

Today we'll stay and enjoy the festivities in town. It's easter without "their" pope and the Poles are feeling the loss intensely. There are memorials and photo exhibitions of him everywhere.

Tomorrow we'll visit Auschwitz and then take another night train to Budapest.

More to come.

update, Auschwitz was odd. At some moments my stomach flipped and at others I was surprisingly unmoved. I suppose that we've been so inundated with images from the Holocaust that I was a bit over prepared. Actually the Jewish quarter in Prague and the synagogue there had more of an emotional impact on me than Auschwitz, but from what I've heard from others, I'm not alone. Many of the photos are in black and white because I was playing with that effect and it some how seemed fitting. One of the things that was so strange is that in the spring the countryside was actually very pretty and it just seemed out of place there.
