Well after weeks of neglect here I am writing the second entry in two days.
I'm in Nainatal, in the foothills of the Himalayas where I was hoping to almost feel like I was in Nepal again. No such luck. It is much cooler, and lacking in the swarms of touts that I'm trying to avoid, and that was my main criteria.
Nainatal is a vacation spot for Indian families and honeymooners. I've seena grande total of three other Westerners here, and I think I've seen my first Indian couples holding hands in public. The town has roughly the same feel as somwhere I'd go on vacation with my family as a kid. There is mini-golf, a zoo, video arcades, people selling balloon animals and popcorn and cotton candy, kids zipping around on rollerskates, a mini-amusement park at the top of a cable car, gondola like boats, and, best of all, swam shaped paddle boats. Walking down the streets here fills me with nostalgic cheer. Being away from the heat fills me with cheer. And to top it off I just ate the best thali I've had in India (or elsewhere I suppose)
Despite the swarms of tourists and general upmarket look to the town, there still aren't any sidewalks and I still feel slightly like I'm in a smokestack...I guess I am still in India after all.
