Where I stayed
We hired a car, a Chevrolet Malibu( sounds far more exotic than it is)while here and have driven around the coast stopping at the inlets and trying to find some lighthouses. 'Finding' is difficult as there is no signage and when we venture down a road, we end up in someone's private driveway. We even ended up in private beaches
Gloucester the closest town, has a number of whale watching experiences. The Stellwagen Bank and Jeffrey's Ledge are the rich feeding grounds where the whales feed for 5 months before returning to the Caribbean to give birth. The whales do not feed again because of the lack of nutrients in the warm water. This area is a National Marine Sanctuary. We watched 5 humpbacks only diving and feeding in the cold waters, not doing tricks. Atlantic humpbacks have white pectoral fins which can be seen underwater as an iridescent green colouring. The trip was interesting, if not spectacular and cold and blustery, particularly on the late return trip.
Gloucester is also where the Perfect Storm was filmed, based on the true story of the 'Andrea Gail' which left the port and all drowned in the perfect storm of 1991.
Halibut Point State Park is another interesting part of the history of this area. Halibut Point is made of sheets of 440 million year old granite. Quarrying began in 1840 and continued 'till 1929. The quarry is now a lake for wildlife
As you can see, our last few days have been about relaxing and eating. Eating in an old diner was better than I imagined. Good food as long as you share. But the best part was the lobster meals. When you order your lobster(by size) you get the whole lobster cut down the back or not cut. They give you a bib because you have to find your way through the shell. You also get a container of melted butter enough to drown your lobster.
Tomorrow we travel back to New York and the following day we board our cruise. We've been spoilt by the free wifi, so not too sure what'll be on the boat????
