Well, turning four in Costa Rica ain't such a bad rap. Here's why:
When your mom asks you what you would like to do for your birthday, you can answer things like, "Go on a boat!" and your mom will say, "YES!" if she is on the trip of YES already. The "trip of yes" philosophy is why we are in Costa Rica for a month and not in Disney World. In Disney, a girl would ask for an exclusive Cinderella makeover and private dinner in the castle. A mom would have to say no. But in Costa Rica, on the trip of yes, a kid can ask for most any available thing and the answer will be yes. YES YES YES. :-)
We made tiny cakes because that was the pan we had. Who knew you could buy Betty Crocker at the tiny 2-aisle grocery store in Tamarindo? Thanks, Betty! It wasn't bad for cake made in a blender--the home owners chose blender over hand mixer. I say YES to that.
Today was a boat safari on the river in Palo Verde National Park. Reesey Puff wanted a boat and a boat she got. And iguanas and crocodiles and birds galore, and -- oddly enough-- stunningly beautiful cows. I guess anything can be beautiful when reflected in the glassy surface of a river you are on, in a boat, in Costa Rica, on your birthday.
Did I mention that it seems that Costa Rica has more butterflies than all of America put together times a million? Seriously. We walk into town and butterflies swarm us--on the beach, on the street--and when we went on the ATVs, there were more butterflies than seemed possible. Today at lunch we ate at an open air restaurant bordered with so many flowers that the butterflies were everywhere. I'm for it!
On the way home, we stopped at a village where people make pottery. I managed to walk away with a pot that was big and amazing because of this argument: small pots are souvenirs. Big pots are works of art. Rob agreed, Karen was giddy, Dave acquiesced--trip of YES! Love all around. Big pots for everyone! Whoot! The kids all got whistles which they played in the van most of the way back to the monkey house--eeek. Max can already play "3 Blind Mice, "Hot Cross Buns" and "Ode to Joy" based on his extensive training with the recorder last year at school. Now that is surely a plus.
We are pretty much at halfway now--2 weeks from tomorrow we fly home--the thought of it makes us sad. :-(
Love to you all--thanks for following us!
