Today was our big day in the competition.  We started with breakfast at the hotel and then drove into Baden.  We met our guide, Sabina, who is an English teacher at the local high school and amateur musician.  She showed us around town a bit and then had lunch at the Theater am Steg, courtesy of the competition. We went back to the bus to change, taking the time to warm up outside the bus and then again at the official warm up venue. The performance venue was a grand theater in the center of town, which was absolutely beautiful but quite dry acoustically.  We performed exceptionally well and were quite excited about the prospects of moving to the next round in the competition.  Following the performance, many of us walked to the hot spring pool and enjoyed some down time and cooling off, as the weather that day was fairly warm. There were separate pools for cool, warm and hot water. The locker rooms were not what we were used to, as they were co-ed with curtained off changing areas. That took some getting used to. In spite of our great performance, when the results were posted at 5:00, we were not on the list.  We were disappointed, but took solace in the fact that we now had some more free time to tool around Baden. This evening we participated in the "Long Night of Choral Music", a series of three concerts featuring the choirs of the competition. We walked into St. Stephen's Church (more on this tomorrow) and were almost blinded by the glint from all the gold in the church. The acoustic was fantastic and we sang quite well, yet again.

I loved this town. Small, quaint, nestled right up against a small wooded hill. The train takes you right from Baden to Vienna if you cared to go. I could honestly spend my life in this town.
