We continued west along Route 66 and into Texas. There was still plenty to see and do along the way. More broken down deserted towns and also, some weird and wonderful sights.  Like Cadillac Ranch for example.  In the 1960s an American millionaire and Route 66 enthusiast buried ten classic Cadillacs in the desert just outside Amarillo to mark the halfway point of Route 66.  Cans of spray paint are provided on site and all visitors are encouraged to try their hand at a bit of graffiti.  Notorious for my "tagging" around East London, I grabbed a can and got stuck in.

There was also another site just down the road called Bug Ranch where a rival had buried some Volkswagon Beetles, so we gave that a visit as well.

We only really clipped the top of Texas and before we knew it, we were in Oklahoma and things started getting REALLY religious.  We were bombarded with signs along the highways with messages that Jesus is coming, are we ready?  We will burn in hell for our sins etc etc..

And then in a tiny little town consisting of no more than 500 people, we stumbled across what they proudly claimed to be the largest cross in America and I have to hand it to them, it was rather large.  I guess this means their Church is the best or something.  Definitely a good use of local community money though.  In fact, speaking of churches, there was literally a different church every 100 metres.  I really have no idea what they all meant.  Fist Baptist, First Lutheran, Evangelical, First Presbyterian bla bla bla.  Didn't mean a thing to me.  All I knew for sure was that their cross was nowhere near as big as the other lot down the road.

Our adventures continued.  We visited the Route 66 museum which was unfortunately shut.  We visited the Cowboy museum in Oklahoma City which was actually really good and had loads of cool stuff about the history of cowboys.  And we visited a giant blue whale on the side of the road.  Not quite sure what the purpose of this was but when I read about it in the guidebook and mentioned to Natalie how it would actually be quite interesting to see a full size replica of a Blue Whale I fear I might have set expectations too high.
