Eli started the day up at 6am for a proper go at surfing...very determined. Mia kept him company surfside, learning more about her camera while experimenting with different light under the early morning sun.

Shortly after checking out of our hotel at Mermaid Beach, we took the train back to Brisbane and checked into our next home where we'll be spending the next 3 days. Following lunch, Eli took a nap (a little tired from battling some the waves in the morning). Mia, on the other hand, relaxed from her morning on the beach, felt like adding to the 2 hours of walking we did this morning and set out for another 2 hours exploring the beautiful city of Brisbane. She came back to a rested Eli with a new addition "so that she could always remember her days in Australia"...thankfully, she has a very loving and understanding husband :).

The downtown core was hustling and bustling with locals and tourists alike - seemingly as if the flood had never happened. After a jaunt over to the south side, Mia noticed some remnants of the devastating floods - piled up garbage (mostly dry wall and flooring) on the sidewalks, ready for pickup. Other than those reminders and the Brisbane cultural centre closed 'until further notice', you would really never guess this city was devastated by flooding only a few weeks ago.

Tomorrow, we will spend the day with Andrew Butler, a friend of Eli's from way back in the day and his girlfriend Annie, to celebrate Australia Day! We'll also get a first-hand look at their place and surrounding area, which was affected by the floods. We were happy to hear that they were safe and sound and are thrilled to be able to see them before we head to New Zealand.

We concluded the evening with a stop at the BSW (beer spirits wine) shop and added to our repertoire of Australian beer tastings. Mia is a fan of the low-carb beers (yummy) while Eli is experimenting with slightly stronger brands. Luckily, every hotel room thus far, no matter how small (and this one in Brisbane is VERY tiny), has had a beer fridge to house any alcoholic items we've bought along the way.

Another game of tennis was on before we hit the sack. We've been following the Australian Open and have both decided we'll be playing more tennis in the future.
