In the morning, Mussie was 20 minutes late in picking us up, but he made up every minute staying off of I-25 and zig-zagging to the airport. He allowed us a whole two hours to check in and get through security. You need that much time for international flights.
In this case, we booked our itinerary through South African Airways. They had the best price because they partner with United, Senegal, and Brussels Airlines. Checking in with United took about 20 or 30 minutes. They had to get a supervisor..., but once it got it going, check in went smoothly.
I was very concerned about our baggage allowances, as I could never get a straight answer from any of the airlines. SAA would say it's up to United because they are the originating flight. United would say it's up to SAA because they booked it. Senegal Air wouldn't tell us anything except the small amount of info on their website. It ended up being fine all the way. The Senegal Air flight was cancelled and provided by Brussels Airlines 36 hours later. They have the same sport equipment exemptions, though none of the airlines actually measured the linear length of any of our bags.
Watch out taking the train to the B gates at Dulles (IAD)!!! We got off the train for B gates and were following the signs to B gates. All of a sudden, the only exit was to the baggage claim. I saw the sign on the door. I yelled for her to stop, but Annie ran to catch the door being held for her. She didn't even cross the door jamb. She just touched the door. They made us exit to baggage claim and return to gates through security. Our arguments were futile. Praise Jah we had plenty of time. It was the first time I've ever had to exit and return through security at a connection.
South African Airways is the second classiest African airline, just after Ethiopian. They had some great shows, movies and games that kept me up when I should have been working on jet lag. We would soon be in Africa.
