April 15, 2010 - Moosehead Lake Ice Out - This is the second earliest on record. The trees buds are opening, the lupines, wildflowers are emerging, daffidols and tulips are up, the song birds are singing, and the loons have returned to Moosehead Lake.

The black flies have started to hatch, the moose are coming out of the woods, and the jack rabbits are turning brown. Typically you can expect black flies, Mothers Day to Fathers Day. So in that respect, one should plan a scenic drives and go looking for moose. The moose are easy to spot along the roadsides this time of year as they venture to open areas away from the biting black flies. This is what makes May and June the best time for wildlife viewing success for moose.
