Where I stayed
Greenpalm Homes, Chennamkary
We were relieved to have had a very comfortable journey on the Maweli Express after some trepidation following our last train experience. Not a lot of sleep for Rob & I as we had a early start at 3:40am and arrived at Alleppey to a still busy-ish station. Desperate for some refreshment we took an auto to the town to seek out some breakfast, assured by the driver that there would be somewhere open at 5am! We arrived at a residence and the auto driver got out and started banging on the iron gate! We were a little alarmed that these locked premises looked nothing like the restaurant we convinced we were coming to! A few minutes later, the gates opened and lights were switched on. A very sleepy fellow emerged, incredibly good natured given the ungodly hour and offered to do us hot drinks and toast. We were VERY grateful, and even more so when he told us he had only got to bed after 2am with the previous night guests!
Onwards then, we piled into the auto again laden with bags to the jetty. A ferry was our next mode of transportation on the Kerala backwaters. With only minutes to spare we were treated to a beautiful, serene sunrise on our hour long journey to the calm of the Green Palms homestay. Maria our very relaxed hostess showed us around the house and compound. She and her husband Philip have two daughters, Mabel & Rachel, same ages as our two. Tiredness and grumpiness forgotten our girls literally got right into their new surroundings with their new friends and were soon on the swings/trampoline and had free rein running around the compound. The house is surrounded by mango, papaya, tamarind, coconut and of course the leafy palm trees. A perfect home setting for the next leg of our journey!
