Travel Tip# 52: Magic is subject to availability

A few weeks ago Noel came over from Calgary to visit his folks in Dundalk, so I jumped at the chance to go up and see him. I arrived at the station too early so sat on my suitcase in the heatless station and waited for my chariot to pick me up, a wee car pulls up with 4 Tuohys crammed inside, down rolls the window, " Get in the fucking car would ye!" ah Noel ah home....

The Tuohys what can you say about that family, I know them in Canada and now know a few in Dundalk, they are mad and marvelous. The Dundalk Tuohy's seemed to revolve around Deal or No Deal, if a show were missed by one family member surely a sibling would fill them in, there was always someone on Deal or No Deal Patrol. It became a lingo between them, "did she deal?" "Yup" "right choice", "where was it?" "17" "hmmm"

We spent most of our time at the Lisdoo pub which was a cozy little pub not unlike most old man pubs I like so much. Played a lot of darts, signed up for raffles, played more darts.

Noel decided it was time to get out and take me for a tour. We got in the truck one morning with Lucozade in hand and headed for the hills. Folks we are about to embark on the Noel Tuohy Terrible Tour. First stop, "The Long Womens Grave"... that he couldn't find. Up and down the deserted hilly roads we went, turned around up and down them again, no such luck. I STILL don't know EXACTLY what it was that we were looking for in the first place? The conversation was directional rather than informational. Second stop, "The Magic Hill" this is one of those hills that it appears you should be going uphill but you actually roll downhill. You park the car and put in neutral and away you go....

Kerri: Uh Noel we are not moving? I see the hill going upwards, but we are not going downwards.

Noel: See its magic!! sometimes its works, sometimes it doesn't! Maybe this isn't where it is? Lets go to the fucking beach.

I shouldn't be too harsh on The Noel Touhy Terrible Tour as I too made some errors. I tried to be cheeky and clever one night by trying to beat him to the bathroom, I ran when he went for it, shoved him aside, closed the door behind me and laughed, only to hear Noel laughing harder beside me. I had run into the room with the shower and the sink, he the one with the toilet. I'll get him back. On our excursion to Tesco, Noel observed and noted after I had lost my phone somewhere in town "you're a disaster", however he didn't mean to say it aloud.I wonder if he saw my pleading eyes through the laughter, "Please Noel help me, I am."

One great thing about travelling Ireland, seeing other peoples towns and working in a hotel is you can beat em at their own game. Perhaps only Dundalk people will appreciate this conversation I had last week.

Drunk Guest: What do you mean there is nowhere to drink at this time in Cork?

Me: Lads, its three in the morning, bars are all closed around here

Drunk Guest: Well, we're from Dundalk and we could still drink at this time

Me: Oh ya, lets see its a Wednesday...hmmm Ridleys would be closed and she(pointing to the girl) would most definitely not get into Whispers.

Drunk Guest(grinning): so do you want to sit with us on the front step and have a smoke?

Me: Ya sure why not

When I got home to Cork, I spoke to Noel and asked him what he did after I left.....

" Er..we played the board game version of Deal or No Deal"

Adrian (features in Port Stewart entry) and Amanda are getting married in Dundalk in June and I look forward to the return. Very exited and counting the days guys...
