In my travels I have had many footwear disasters. I don't know why I can't get it together on the road. This is the first one I can remember. In 1979 I was on a 4 month trip with Exodus Expeditions through Africa. I don't know if this happened in Nigeria but it's as good as anywhere. The very cheap sandals I had bought in Europe totally crapped out and I was walking BAREFOOT! through the outskirts of some town. The local shoe seller was soliciting me and rightly so. He made flip-flops out of old tire rubber. Yes here comes disaster number two. It didn't take long before I had totally hacked my feet to pieces wearing these items of haute torture. I spent the next week in my boots and socks while my feet healed in some of the hottest weather I've ever experienced. One day I must tell you about wearing new running shoes on a Thai tribal trek.
