This morning’s border crossing went much more smoothly than yesterday’s.  We successfully crossed into and through Tijuana, down Mexico 1 to Rosarito. We found a quaint motel via Lonely Planet just a few blocks off the beach. After checking in for two nights, we strolled down to the beach. We walked a while down the beach and decided to walk back via the main street. Our first food stop in Mexico was El Torito for fish and shrimp tacos and ceviche. We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling on the beach with our books. Jim has started reading Douglas Wolk’s Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean, an academic work about sequential art (comic books). Steph, meanwhile, is reading Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, one of the many books on her list to read before she dies. Only about 2,337 left!

For dinner this evening we tried El Nido, a seafood & steak restaurant reviewed in Lonely Planet. Because it was a Monday night, the crowd was extremely light, but the food was good. Steph had beef tamales; Jim had grilled salmon and –against all conventional wisdom—also ate all the green salad and raw veggies set before him. We ended the night trading off reading chapters of Kinky Friedman’s Greenwich Killing Time, out loud to one another. Kinky’s murder mystery novels are perfect for us; an NYC setting for Steph and plenty of good ol’ boy puns and conventional (sort of!) wisdom for Jim. And we hear may be making another stint for Texas governor next time around … Viva La Kinkster!

We spent all of today just lounging in Rosarito, Mexico again. We began the day checking our email and enjoying coffee and some wonderful crepes at Nina’s Kafe, a tiny coffeehouse with a wonderfully friendly feel. Jim made a meal of the ham, egg, cheese, and mushroom crepe. Steph had the nutella and cream cheese crepe with a tasty mocha. We then made our way back down the beach where we both successfully and thoroughly burned large portions of our upper torsos. In our haste to taste local cuisine and enjoy, as cheaply as we could, local flavor and color, we totally forgot to spend any money or time on sun protection.

Before the ill effects of our new coloration truly had a chance to set in that evening, we showered and set out to find dinner and do a little shopping. We initially wanted to try a place we had stumbled on called Tacomics, which was adorned with several action figures of Marvel comics’ heroes. However, the dog guarding the locked gate this evening was not in a very hospitable mood, so we moved back to another taqueria we had seen and shared some tacos – beef and al pastor (a seasoned roasted pork).

Finally, before reading aloud some more Kinky Friedman and finding out the killer’s identity in Greenwich Killing Time, we stopped at a few sidewalk stands along the main street, where Jim found a couple of really sweet Luchadore masks (Mexican wrestlers a la Nacho Libre). And with those two souvenirs in hand, he could already declare the trip to Mexico a success.

Hola Amigos
I live in Rosarito Mexico, and you sound like the perfect tourist to our lovely seaside town.

Note to others... no bodies left on the streets, no drug lords lording over the citizens... no corrupt police! Just good restaurants, friendly people and beautiful sunsets.

As a gringo who has taken up residence in Baja, I can say that the tourists we see these days are reaping up bargains and are greeted with celebrity status! The sensational media reports concerning violence south of the border are a mystery to those of us who live here. We know the drug cartels are killing each other... but guess what... we don't care! The government here is committed to stopping this crap once and for all... and we welcome soldiers and police! Not a single tourist of foreign resident (some 14,000 of us) have been involved or impacted in any way. We are happy and safe.

You actually missed some of the better places... but I love hearing about the good time you had. Just proves that if you are curious and willing to experiment you can find good times without a guide. Thanks for writing, and providing such a wonderful report.

Congratulations, and hasta pronto!
