Friday: After yesterday's walk along part of the South Rim we decided to spend part of today hiking into the upper interior. Numerous signs and warnings on hiking trail maps made us wave off the idea of hiking down to the river and back in one day. Actually, the thought hadn't occurred to us until we realized that with all the warnings, people must try it quite a bit. After the rather steep 3 miles or so down to Cedar Ridge and back to the trailhead, it's a pretty good thing we didn't try to go all the way down to the basin. We didn't count the switchbacks, but it mast have been at least 20-30 each way. Fortunately, the temps in and around the Canyon only reached the low 80s.
At the bottom of the hike on Cedar Ridge we enjoyed a couple of granola bars. At the same time, the rest of the gathered crowd were entertained by the hustler squirrel who was trying to con everyone out of whatever granola bars or fruit they had with them. We were not fooled or impressed, on account of the fact that we have had experience both with squirrels and hustlers.
On the way back toward Flagstaff, we drove through the Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. We stopped a few times to look at the preserved pueblos on the grounds of Wupatki Nat'l Mon.
On the culinary front we tried our first restaurant from Jane & Michael Stern's Road Food. El Bravo in Phoenix specializes in Arizona-Mex. Steph had the Navajo Taco, basically a chalupa on Indian Fried Bread, and Jim had the Chile Rellena Burro, essentially chille rellena wrapped like a burrito.
Tomorrow we take the 310 to Yuma. Or perhaps the Mazda, but either way we will be headed toward our next stop on our way to Baja California.
