While my parents were in town, one of the day trips we did was to Metz, France. Metz is on the border of France and Germany. Throughout history, they have changed hands multiple times - sometimes Germany, sometimes France. They are not even 2 hrs from our hotel in Germany and we noticed signs as soon as we arrived on windows and doors saying, "Wir sprechen Deutsch nicht." (We do not speak German). My issue is that they do, most likely, speak German...and English for that matter. But if you could not speak French, they did not want your business.
We went first to the St. Stephen Cathedral. It is the 3rd tallest in France and has the most square feet of stained glass in the world. Unfortunately, the sun sets at 4:30 - so we saw a lot of stained glass, but not a lot of color
The Metz Christmas Market was next on our list. It was different from the last one that we went to in Trier in that they didn't sell a lot of homemade goods. Theirs was mostly just food and food products. They did have a giant ferris wheel that we rode to get a glimpse of the city. We decided that we didn't need to stick around too much longer in Metz and went back to our rental car to find that it had been vandalized. Not accidentally bumped in the parking lot, but someone saw that it was a rental and actually bent off a piece of the trim on the side. We called our fantastic German rental company and they just asked us to fill out a police report. No problem. So we try to find a police station. The closest one is closed. We find some police on the street who point and say they can't help us, we need to find an open station. We FINALLY find an open police station (at 7 pm on Tuesday!) and not a single person in the entire place speaks ANY English - or so they claim. Luckily, the rental company could sympathize with our situation having dealt with French people before also and didn't make us pay for the damage.
We couldn't get back across the border to Germany fast enough!
