Nakhon Ratchasima often shortened to Korat or Khorat is one of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand, the main town of which is Nakhon Ratchasima. Our destination was a small village some 50 kms north of Korat, a journey which took about 9 hours, involving toilet, fuel and food stops - The Thais love to eat, and they do it often and plentifull, Its amazing how they manage to stay so slim with the amount of food they put down their necks - The theory being that he amont of chillies in the food helps to burn all the excess flab away, and EVERYTHING has chillies added to it, once you get used to it,you develop a taste for it and very nice it is too.
We got into the village in the late afternoon and then it was straight down to business, sit down on the reed mats, cross legs - or in my case try to cross legs - and crack open the Thai whisky and lay out the food feast, the Thais dont put small portions on the table, evrery meal is a bloody banquet.
Sunday was another early start, after another feast it was time to get to the reason for coming here, a fund raising day for the local temple, one of my travelling companions was the owner of a bar in Hua Hin and she had arranged the gathering to gather funds from her crowd, all the monies collected were then pinned to a stump from a small banana tree by way of a pointed stick, the money tree was then put in the back of a pickup which followed a procession to the temple where we met up with other processions to the carnival within the temple grounds - Jeezus, I have never been so hot, the weather was a sticky 40 plus degrees and I was dripping.
Back to the house then for another piss up and feast,
ANOTHER early start for Monday morning and the long drive back, on the way though we stopped at nother temple for the girls to visit the guardian monk, Buddhist have a personal monk who they visit and discuss their future and present lives, rather like a soothsayer he advises them on what days are important in making decisions, very strange but it seems to work for them.
Back in Hua Hin about 10 and an early night - Knackered!!
