The Ghan was a bloody uncomfortable journey, for 2 nights I managed just a few minutes kip every hour, getting into Adelaide about mid day, this was even after sharing a few beers on board with an English lad from Chorley - Cheers Rob... We managed this in spite of the bloody train crew continuously telling us to vacate the tables in the restaurant car to make way for people wanting to sit and eat a meal (there were loads of spare seats) ... Rob gave way and bought a meal just to shut them up.
Adelaide is another fine Oz city but the train staion is a 40 minutes walk into town, pulling my luggage. I put my bags into left luggage at the bus station and again I hired a free bike and for about 6 hours I merrily pedalled around this lovely place. I then caught the overnight greyhound bus to Melbourne - another sleepless night.
Melbourne was ANOTHER nice city - I have yet to visit a city in Oz that I did not like - and I had 10 hours to kill before my flight to Tasmania, so after putting my stuff in the left luggage at Melbourne station I had a wander around, getting back to catch the shuttle bus to the airport.
My flight to Launceston (pronounced lorn-ses-ton) took off at 4-45 and 50 minutes later I landed in Tasmania, after the 30-40 degree heat of the last few days, it was a shock to the system to walk out to 20 degrees, I was bloody freezing !!! So cold in fact that I have gone down with a cold AND bloody hay fever again, my eyes are watering faster than my nose...
Booked into Launceston Backpacker hostel and shared a room with a Belgian lad, after a solid nights sleep, we decided to go treking along the Cataract gorge, a nice place just out of town, after a 3 hour trek we finished up for a couple of pints in a local pub.
One more night here and then tomorrow its a bus to Hobart - My Belgian mate is off to do the overland trail, a 6 day trek from north to south Tasmania
G'day mates...
