We popped in to Townsville, which must be the town with the least imaginative name in the entire world, and headed to their "rockpool", constructed to provide protection from the stingers in the sea.  We had the 80 x 40 metre pool to ourselves and it was lovely and when we came out, we saw the sign that said "actually the stingers can still get into here between the rocks so it's not guaranteed stinger free at all".

We didn't get stung....

Then we launched the car South intending to break the back of the journey to Brisbane.  Until we shredded a tyre at 100kps.  Completely destroyed it!

Within seconds, two travellers had stopped to offer assistance.  The first went on their way when we told them we were ok.  The second would have gone on his way but had no juice in the battery of his Harley and had to call out the RACQ.  We left him there waiting for a pickup.  Really felt terribly guilty doing so.....

Anyway, that forced us into immediate action.  We needed a replacement tyre so we sought out tyre depots and campsites in Proserpine, a place that the Lonely Planet suggests "not many travellers find any good reason to visit here, let alone stop here!"

Found the tyre place, which was shut so went and checked in to the campsite. "It's strange" said the owner "but we've only got one other tent here.  All the rest are caravanners".

The notices displayed around the camp might give a hint to why that may be.  "Campers please note.  Snakes are active here currently.  Always wear shoes.  Always carry a spotlight.  Be vigilant. Don't tackle them (yeah right!!)"

And perhaps a lot of you know how I feel about snakes.  I'm lying in my tent, all zipped up, and dreading the time when I have to pop to the bathroom.....

I'll write more tomorrow - if I survive the night...
