The start of our journey south involved a detour up to the plateau inland of Cairns called the Atherton Tableland as there were a number of opportunities to see some waterfalls and some wildlife that we'd not yet spotted.

We discovered, having arrived at the lookout at about 11am that platypi (?) only come out of their dens at dawn and dusk.

The tree kangaroos that inhabit the forest around the curtain fig tree we went to see were hiding so no joy there either.

The turtles in Lake Eacham had been scared off by some guy doing backflips so didn't see them either...

And the Millstream Falls which the 2009 Lonely Planet Guide to Australia notes as - and I quote - "the 340m-high Millstream Falls" turned out to be approximately 12 to 13 metres high. But coincidentally, they were 340 metres along the access pathway, so the signboard said...

But it was a nice detour into somewhere a bit different and we did see some nice little towns and some beautiful waterfalls.
