A five hour drive North from Noosa takes you to "the most Northerly surfing beach" in Queensland, North of which it's inadvisable to swim because of the box jellyfish and the sea wasps. The beach here is apparently perfect for beginner surfers due to the gentle waves and waist high water. So that's what we're here to do.

I, of course, am already an experienced surfer due to my time in Woolacombe but Helen and Dan are truly beginners so my intention is to check them in at the surf school to learn the rudiments while I go ride some waves......

Well, when we got there, the three hour surf lesson was cheaper than hiring a board for two hours so, of course, I agreed to add the benefit of my experience to the teachers armoury!

Three hours fantastic fun (you'll note I didn't say three hours fantastic surfing!!!) for $17 - 10.  Bargain.  At the end, Dan managed the best ride - at about three seconds - and I finished in second place - with about a second and a half AND a controlled dismount (about one second more than my previous best) - and Helen got to stand on the board....

A great morning (even after a night in which the fabric softener that we'd applied to the tents clearly did nothing for the waterproofness of the fabric....)

Off to Rockhampton next for big steaks.....

Hm, no photos - can I add the mythical "upright on a surf board" to the same category as drop bears?! NEED PICS TO PROVE IT!

No Becks, you don't need photos as I have a certificate to say that I'm a Level 1 Surfer..... It includes such difficult tasks as "finding the beach", "identifying a wave" etc....
