Where I stayed
Mary and Derek's

Flag of Australia  , Queensland,
Saturday, March 2, 2013

We were invited, no let me correct that, instructed, to go and stay with Mary and Derek, friends of Jane's. I told them that we refused to impose on them and when Mary proved intransigent, I succumbed quickly - as I didn't want to offend her....

So we left Labrador where we'd enjoyed a full week not having to pitch tents in downpours and headed, in torrential rain, to Brisbane. I'd told Mary that we'd be with them late on Saturday afternoon (after we'd "done" a tour of the city centre). We really couldn't manage more than two hours, even allowing for Helen buying a replacement umbrella (for the $10 one she bought in Sydney that lasted three minutes before breaking). NB this one was $5 and lasted 30 minutes - altogether better than the previous one....

We landed at Mary and Derek's, very wet, at about 2.30pm. We just couldn't sit waiting in the car any longer.... They were very welcoming considering: a) they'd never met us before (Mary had taken references from mutual friends and was still prepared to permit us over the threshold - thanks Lou!!) and b) we dripped all over their floor....

And they were fantastic hosts. Nothing was too much trouble and they fed and watered us superbly.

M&D gave us a tour of some of the areas covered in water in the 2011 flood - horrendous! and on Sunday we three headed into town to meet up with Helen's old University pal, Karen (Dibden) and her chap Josh. After a nice reunion and a little over two and a half hours in total in the CityCat ferry, we returned to the McDougall home and settled in for another evening of fine dining. Derek excelled himself on the barbeque and the legs of lamb were decimated...

On Monday, we bade our farewells - much, I'm certain, to the relief of both Mary and Derek, who was heard to mutter that he was embarking on an "AFW". An "AFM" was heard emanating from Mary's lips. I think perhaps we should have applied a tad more restraint.....

Thank you Mary and Derek. We had a lovely time and we're so sorry about the bar bill.....

For those of you who know Mary and Derek but who haven't managed to get out and see them. Do so immediately - they are fantastic hosts and their new house is stunning!!!

Not so sure they thought we'd got on Lou. Derek needs to check his investments to see whether he can afford to replenish his cellar....

I know Mary and Derek will have loved having you-they really like people to stay even friends of friends. Their house looks very similar to their house in Singapore where we stayed with them a few years ago.
Your journey has been amazing so far but very sorry to hear about the'weather' Looking forward to seeing you soon Px
