Where I stayed
We have booked into the Golden Shores Holiday Club resort through the timeshare and it's spot on. We have a nice apartment with a balcony overlooking Broadwater which is equipped with everything we need to achieve our planned itinerary.
Jane's son Rob and his partner Louise came for a barbeque on Sunday when Rob wound Chloe up with tales of sharks, spiders, snakes and drop bears. (Search Google images for Australian drop bears - enjoy!) and on Monday we've headed to Wet'n'Wild for a fun filled morning of very wet, very high rides. So far, we've thankfully avoided Surfers Paradise which is just South of us as it looks a little too "commercial" for our tastes.
Addendum - Tuesday 26/02/13
Right, we've now had three nights whan we've not had to erect or strike our tents and that in itself has contributed to a bit of a "chilled" feeling. Helen announced yesterday, after two full days here, that she really didn't want to go back to camping! On the local news this morning, they're telling us that there are new floods somewhere North of Brisbane and the seven day forecast continues to show rain and lightning throughout! We've decided that when the end of our week here arrives, we'll head North as fast as we can (not very with three and luggage up in a twenty year old Hyundai with 300,000 kilometres on the clock) until we reach the sunny blue skies that we've seen on the radar pictures. We may be in Cairns by Sunday!!! Or possibly not....
But, we're having a great time here and there are a few observations and additions that I need to make.
1. When we went kayaking on Broadwater on Saturday, after I'd had enough of battling the onshore winds, I drifted back to the beach and sat on my kayak while the rest of the team wore themselves out. I occupied myself by watching a guy try to teach an old fellow to kitesurf. Well, I have to say that it reminded me very much of my surf instructor in Woolacombe trying to get me upright on a surfboard (without a sail attached!). There wasn't a cat in hell's chance that this fellow was ever going to catch the wind. I'm pretty sure that it was the instructor that called a halt to the farce shortly after the pupil did something terminal to the rigging which necessitated about fifteen minutes of repair work..
2. We went into Surfer's Paradise for a bite of lunch today. Lunch was nice but I'm wondering how anyone can get a two word town name so absolutely wrong. The beach was closed so there were no surfers. And Paradise, it ain't! Glad to be out.
3. But today is, overall, a good day. Firstly, I used some of my newly obtained wine selection skills to choose a bottle to take with me to Rob's "Aunty Sally" this evening. Oh I do hope it's ok as I followed all the rules I can remember from our Hunter Valley tour... And secondly, I found a barber who didn't demand that I sold all my worldly possessions in order to pay for a haircut. As a result, I am beautifully trimmed and happy!
Another addendum Friday 01 March
We've had a real chiiling week. Weather seems to have calmed down a bit, no more gale force winds. Yesterday hot and sunny and had a pool day
Penguins, polar bear, rays of all types, sharks and, of course, dolphins. I passed on "dinosaur world" and topped up the caffeine levels while H & D investigated. They soon joined me in the cafe! Nice morning out and don't feel too bad about the animals in captivity as Sea World apparently act as a rescue centre. Certainly the rays all had smiles on their faces....
Decamping tomorrow up to Brisbane to catch up with some folks...
