We headed back to Auckland to meet up with Caroline, the girl that Neil rendezvoused with when he first came out here three years ago and her parents, who are here on holiday and one of her friends Katerina, who has just returned here after being in Europe and South Africa for a while. Oh, and her husband Marc. Plans were in place to do the big trip North to Cape Reigna together....

On our first day, we got as far as Matai Bay where we put our $10 apiece into the honesty box for the DOC (Department of Conservation) campsite and pitched our five tents and gazebo in a circle for the communal singsong later. But before we could get to that, we swam and played frisbee for a couple of hours on the most glorious horseshoe shaped beach of golden sand and big breaking waves. The waves were so powerful that the old man of the three who sampled the sea, couldn't actually get past the breakers. At which, I retired to the beach and simply smiled a lot!! Caroline then organised us into knocking up a fine chicken risotto and, for the first time in a month, pudding as well, before Neil serenaded us to sleep with a medley of Bowie numbers on his guitar! Perfic!

The campsite "facilities" included toilets and cold showers. I can personally vouch that the showers are positioned to catch the chill easterly winds straight of the beach.
