What I did
Traditional Kathakali dance

Flag of India  , Kerala,

We thought that while we were here, we ought to catch a bit of culture so we went to a performance of Kathakali dance which originates in northern Kerala.

The blurb said that the make up takes an hour so we went to look at them putting on the make up.  It did!  And you could see why.  There were only three players in this play/dance but the costumes were works of art.

And after they had their make up on, they spent half an hour explaining the facial expressions, hand movements, dance etc.  So we watched, and we understood - and when the play started, we forgot what was meant to be the elephant and what was meant to be the wife!  Not ideal, you'll agree...

And the play lasted an hour.  So, in case you're not keeping up, that's an hour and a half of preparation for an hours performance!  What a lot of effort!  Is all culture so intensive?

Personally, I thought the plot was a bit thin.  In summary. Villager is threatened by monster.  Good prince pops along and tells villager he'll see to it.  Prince kills monster.  The end.

But it was an hour solid of drummers - very loud, a singer (didn't understand a word!) and three actors/dancers.

So we've done the culture now and my guess is that we won't be goong back to see another of these plays.  (There are about 270 of them, we were told!).  Seriously, it was entertaining (though very loud) and we're glad we did it.

Sadly, the theatre being dark, the photos don't do it justice but you'll get the drift I think...
