Just a quick entry to confirm that we survived the train journey and have landed safely in the absolute heart of Fort Cochi, which appears to be a lovely vibrant place.  Looking forward to seeking out a Kingfisher as the licensing laws here are pretty tough.  I apparently need to look for teapots masquerading as jugs of lager!

The train journey started badly - an hour and three quarters late leaving Goa - but got considerably better arriving in Ernakulam half an hour early.  And only two loo breaks each in the whole 1000 odd kiliometres!!

The taxi journey from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi on the otherhand was not quite so enjoyable.  Picture if you will a 1950's Indian made Ambassador with a front bench seat, no seat belts, apparently no handbrake (or I assume not as it was rolling towards me when I loaded the luggage in the boot) and a driver who appeared to only be able to look directly forward (and hence ignoring all traffic approaching from either side - even if he was joining a main road) and who undoubtedly exceeded the mandatory 1000 toots a day limit - in 6 kilometres!!  All entertaining stuff - Jane's currently having a lie down to recover!!!

We have a new best friend now.  A tuk tuk driver who is taking us on a two hour tour of the island (of Fort Kochi) tomorrow for 150 rupees ((1.80).  Mind you, we had to help him get a free tablespoon of petrol earlier by letting him take us to a very expensive bazaar from whom he clearly gets a commission!  Not surprised the prices they were trying to charge!!!

Anyway, the Park Avenue (18 per room per night) is very acceptable and the staff are all rushing round like mad intent on making everything spot on.

More to follow - with a bit of luck to include my first video upload.....
