Where I stayed

And me, I headed for Wast Water. Probably my favourite place in this country ever! Vic told me I should camp at the Wasdale Head Inn but this is only for tents so I pitched up at the National Trust campsite right at the head of Wast Water.  What a spot!  A stone's throw from the lake and a gentle stroll/bike ride to the Wasdale Head Inn.  That’s the one I went for....

Here’s commitment for you.  Met a bloke who’d driven up from Cardiff that morning so he could "practice" Scafell Pike.  Six hour drive, three hour climb, pint in the Wasdale Head Inn, a night’s sleep and home the following day.  Can’t think why his wife didn’t come with him...

The following day, Sunday, I’d got a plan off the net to walk along the scree on the East side of the lake, then back along the hummocks from which the scree emanates.  Nice little five mile walk it said!  The net does not give any impression of height!!  Yes, it might well have been five miles but I suppose if I’d read the small print, I would have realised that it peaked at 609 metres above sea level – approx 569 metres above the level at which I’d started!  God, I was knackered!  But a hell of a feeling of achievement when I got to the top – and a stunning view of Wast Water.  Well worth it overall – and even more so when I cycled to the Wasdale Head Inn for a couple of pints of a local brew in the afternoon.  Lovely!

Tomorrow I head off to the Duddon Valley and then, if all goes according to plan, up the Wrynose Pass to maybe “wild camp” somewhere near the top.  This could test the bus beyond anything it’s had to deal with so far...
