While Sze was at the embassy I walked around downtown to explore the city on my own. I walked to the convention center and marveled at the mountains in the distance beyond the water. The thing that strikes me the most about Vancouver is how green it is. I took quite a few pictures of trees the first day. The low clouds that hung over the city created an even greater contrast between the mountains, the water and the city.

I walked passed the Vancouver Art Gallery and found all of these patches of tranquility where an urban dweller can find a bit of solace from the buzz of the city. Vancouver is a city of amazing urban planning.

Once Sze was done at the embassy we walked down Robson Street to the West End to meet some friends, Candie and Andrea, for dinner at a Malaysian restaurant called Banana Leaf. The food was delicious and so was my "dragon's eyes" martini made with Lychee juice. After we said good bye to our friends we decided to go next door to a cupcake bakery that is appropriately named Cupcakes. My cupcake was called "the diva", while Sze had the more traditional chocolate cupcake. We took our cupcakes to go since we were too full from dinner to eat another bite.

Taking the advice of Candie and Andrea, we walked down a few blocks to English Bay and then caught a cab back to the hotel where we rendezvoused with the cupcakes.
