Sze and I woke up early and saw a gorgeous sunrise. Then we packed up and hit the road. The scenery changed a lot on our way to Haleakala. From tropical to desert to mountains. Wow! The temperature dropped 20 degrees or so, and we made good use of the beanies, sweatshirts and jackets we brought with us.
We were in total awe of the clouds on the way up the mountains. We stopped at the ranger station to get another stamp in the passport. Then we put up the tent at Hosmer Grove and unpacked the car. Hosmer Grove had pretty nice facilities in terms of bathrooms and stuff, no showers though, but with adequate running water.
The camp ground was quite crowded and there were a plethora of Germans. They occupied the majority of the campground and it was funny to hear German chatter through the night. They must have been on one sweet vacation because their meals were cooked for them and they were driven around by chauffeurs. Interesting way to camp. We were jealous.
We decided to drive up the mountain to check out the scenery. Sze was taken by the silversword, some odd endangered Hawaiian plant.
Hungry, we drove back to camp for dinner. Sze ate tuna out of a can and let me eat the ramen. Frankly, this way of eating is getting gross. We decided to drive back up to the summit to see the sunset. It was amazing!
