COLOMBO

After changing our departure date four times, and having agreed that our boat project was at last in order, we finally made our second trip to Sri Lanka. We arrived to Colombo where we met up with Joel and Becca, an American couple who has been living and working in Colombo for the past nine months. They graciously hosted us in their home outside of the city, where we ended up staying for a few days.

This trip to Sri Lanka began on a positive note. The cloud of Mefloquin had been lifted (we quit taking it at the end of our last trip to Lanka, deciding that we'd rather contract malaria than continue to withstand the psychotic effects of the drug) and we arrived with clear heads and optimistic hearts. The first few days were spent similarly to those in Singapore, dividing our time between the boat project and seeing friends we'd made on our previous trip.

The majority of our time was spent sorting details and meeting with Ashfaque to discuss and finalize plans for the boat project. We discovered that in addition to the 38 boats that were damaged or destroyed in the town of Kirinda, there were 64 boats from Kirinda's outlying areas that were also lost to the tsunami. This reality added another dimension to our project, and together we decided to broaden our focus to the reparation of boats while continuing to raise funds toward the purchase of new ones.

In the meantime, the anticipated delivery date for the two boats, motors, and nets was for the sixth of March. That left us five days to explore the island before leaving for Kirinda.
