So sad, Today we are leaving Nafplio. It has been so wonderful  just enjoying this little town. We don't have gobs of time so we ate our last breakfast in the same place that we had our first, at Popeyes. 

We are driving back to Athens today and staying in Markopoulo at the Hotel Pantheon Markopoulo, near the airport. It is a suburb of Athens and is pretty industrialized but it is very close to the airport and that is its major selling point.

The drive ended up being a little more exciting than we wanted. We were trying to avoid going right through the heart of Athens. We had heard that the traffic of Athens is some of the worst in the world and up until today we had avoided driving right in the heart of Athens. Today we weren't so lucky. We took one wrong turn and we were in the center of town. We got a little lost and ended up at an area where the local greeks take the weekends, have picnics and fly kites. The kites were beautiful and we stopped for a moment to get our barings...and use a port a potty. Everyone was starting to get a little tense and we all needed to get out of the tiny little van.

Cory did a fabulous job driving and managed to get us out of the center of town and to our little hotel. The hotel was very nice. I think it is usually used for business travelers. We dropped off our bags and went to find something to eat in Markopoulo based on the directions of the hotel owner.

At first it seemed that everything in the town was closed down. It was an odd time to be eating and it was the weekend. We finally found a restaurant that was open. It was empty when we came in but before we left it filled right up.

Our waiter spoke some english and volunteered to get us an english menu. He searched and searched. They had just one and it hadn't been used since they got it 5 years ago. He said they mostly got locals.  Looking over the menu I decided to have Lamb chops. They were the specialty. This seemed to please the waiter. 



As we waited for our food one of the men came from the back carrying a full lamb carcus, head and everything. He hung it from a hook in the kitchen. We could see it clearly from our seat. There was a little bamboo partition but you could see through the cracks and the partition was only about 4.5 feet off of the floor so you could see above it. This is when the man pulled the head end of the Lamb over to the side, grabbed a cleaver and started hacking off the head with fervor. 



I guess the lamb chops are fresh! Really fresh! The meal was delicious and it proved to be a local favorite. The restaurant was full of people by the time that we left.

We were leaving very early in the morning so we headed back to the hotel to go to bed really early. We were in bed by like 8 so that we could get up at 4am.  Yikes that is early but we have a flight home to catch.
