We are a week away from leaving on our trip. We have our vaccines, our anti malaria meds and I have even started packing. I got a call from my family two days ago. It seems that my Mam-maw who is 94 had a spill at MacDonald's. She broke her leg and will be having surgery tomorrow. She still lives by herself and is a strong lady but you can't help but consider what it is for a 94 year old to have surgery.
Then today the news broke that there were two explosions in Nairobi. There is a part of me that thinks we should cancel. We have the trip insurance that would get our money back. The other part of me rationalizes things. Right now Kenya is on high alert. They have security focused on the tourism industry. Even the two explosions happened in very local areas. Terrorism is most effective when a government isn't on alert and right now Kenya is more alert than ever.
The other part of me realizes that Kenya needs the tourism right now. They will lose a lot of business due to the threats. I remember when Florida had the the 4 hurricanes sweep through here. Truth was, in central Florida there wasn't much damage and Disney only closed for a day. Due to tourist canceling their vacations the businesses in the area lost a lot of business, some even closed their doors forever.
We are still planning to make our trip to Kenya but with the way that things are going I am ready for anything.
