5 Feb 2010 - Peoria, Illinois

This is the main event we were waiting for, Monster Jam!  This all started a few months ago when Jose found a clip of "Megasaurus", a dinosaur robot that could destroy a car.  For fun, I looked into it and found that he was coming to Chicago on Valentine's Day!  Due to many factors, it ended up not working out but I noticed that it would be in Peoria the weekend before.  So alas, we decided to make the trek.  I was excited to go to Monster Jam, a monster truck show, for many reasons.  It attracts people of a different subculture, and it is interesting to see that.  Reason two, monster trucks.  I hadn’t seen a monster truck show before so it certainly intrigued me.

We arrived, purchased some beverages, bought Gary a beautiful Grave Digger hat, and sat down.  The lights dimmed and the beautiful monster trucks emerged.  We sat through some patriotic propaganda and then met the drivers.  There was 'Lil Miss Dangerous’ who was a female monster truck driver.  Awesome or awesome?  Our trucks were the Incinerator, American Guardian, the Felon, High Maintenance, Anger Management, and Smasher. The first half was a little slow.  They had wheelie competitions which meant that each truck would do a jump and whoever would go fastest would win.  They also had quad wars which were kind of… sans exciting races.  They tried to get us excited to cheer on the white team, ‘team Illinois’, vs the black ‘team Indiana.’  They had a campy little rivalry.  At intermission, Jose bought a chicken sandwich and I bought some delicious mini corn dogs.  The lights dimmed, and I heard “Megasaurus” over the loudspeaker.  I grabbed my corn dogs and ran, leaving Jose eating peacefully at the table.  They then had freestyle which was really cool.  The drivers got to go at the arena, going over cars and ramps as they pleased.  On some of the ramps the trucks would clear the cars, and others had some awesome car crushing moves.

After the show we decided to stick in Peoria because it had been snowing.  We hadn’t really eaten dinner so we explored.  Jose was surprised that it was such a big city.  Unfortunately, everything was closed.  Bennegin’s closed at 8pm!  We finally found Old Chicago, a pizza place, open and ate.  I just got a soup and a salad and Jose got Lasagna.  Last time I went to central Illinois I went to Old Chicago.  Escape Chicago to go eat Chicago style food.  Good thing it’s delicious!
