Two lovely farewell dinners over 2 nights with Laura & Tom on Friday night, then at Gen & Tom's on Saturday night. Wondering why we arranged to go away over Christmas. What were we thinking!
13 odd hours on board, but hey, Virgin Australia wasn't too cramped, even gave us the gift of no-one in the other seat -hurray! Took it it turns to lie down but alas - NO sleep!
LA - we can do this, we've been awake 24 hours, but a mis-read has us walking miles from Terminal 5 to Terminal 1. People are directing us all over the place, but hey, where do we need to go but BACK to Terminal 5.
Tiredness and headache setting in...I don't think we can do this!
We brave our first purchase, in a Lemonade store, comfort Southern food. Greasy burrito soup for Michael, cinnamon stewed apple for me. Do we have to tip in food chain store, no, doesn't seem like it. Phew!
We can't do this! Sooo tired at the departure gate, we're looking for somewhere to lay our heads.
Take our seats and boof.... asleep, we BOTH miss the take-off. Half an hour of sleep has us both feeling somewhat human.
We re-gain just enough strength to master the Air-Train, then the BART to downtown San Fran, along with several endless flights of stairs to haul bags up, no working escalators.
Emerge at the top to a barrage, a circus of color, noise, light, dance, music that is Union Square - San Francisco!..............................
By Monday we feel great again. Cable Car, free when we have no small change - bonus!
Alcatraz in the heat, perfect weather.
Tried the famous sourdough at Boudins, Fisherman's Wharf, this time with melted Havarti.
Walked vertically uphill to the Coit Tower for views right over San Fran. The steepness of the streets is like nowhere I've seen.
Tonight a good latte at Caffe Trieste, (groovy decor) gave us the strength to continue the walk home.
Tuesday - free again on the 2 x $6 cablecar, what's with that? Open top bus tour and walked over the Golden Gate Bridge, so long, so hot! De Young Gallery for Native American art & photography.
Wednesday, more free buses, 3 hrs of biking to the Bridge again. Lunch in Haight-Ashbury - nice food, seedy area. Chinatown at night.
Last day tomorrow, aiming for City Lights Bookstore, a bit of shopping and last looking around.
Bit worried about picking up the car in the heart of the city and driving on the wrong side of the road.....
