Continuing up the California coast we spent Sunday 11th at Eureka. Nothing too exciting here but we found the "Old Town" and a good Irish Pub for another session of over-feeding and a few tips on watching American Football on the TV from the hospitable waitress. Can't get over the size of the meals they serve up here.
With weather warnings on the TV we thought it might be a good idea to see what the local Avis agent at Arcata Airport thought about our suspect tyres. Couldn't believe the contrast in customer service from San Francisco. These guys were horrified by our experience at SF and the condition of the tyres, and we were very happy to drive away with a near new Ford Edge (territory) AWD with all bells and whistles. Thanks Tori & Kelly, you restored our faith in humanity!
Before we knew it, we had crossed the Oregon state line. The scenery is amazing; the road is forest lined and windy and frequently opens out to steep cliffs and a wild and rugged coastline. More photogenic light houses, rocks covered in sea lions, sand dunes, fishing boats and tree-lined lakes. Don't know where the US hides it's 300 million people and their cars, but they aren't up here.
Overnight stays have been in dated but comfortable hotels $55 -$80 a night with a light breakfast.
Monday 12th was at Coos Bay. Even the hotel proprietor told us "there's nothing here!". But driving out, we found the rotting docks & red roofed fishing shed - one of my fave photos.
Along the way we found a cute little village - Florence. Good shopping. Dropped in on a friend of a friend working in a coffee shop to suprise her with a message from him - funny.
Our last night of the road trip was Tuesday 13th at Tillamook on the coast two hours from Portland.
The drive across to Portland was scenically beautiful, running river by the road, continuous rapids, Autumn (Fall) leaves everywhere and lots of mist, had to be early to get the car by  10am to Portland airport. Done!  Expected trouble with Avis, but simple and good. Turns out Avis -San Fran are the only fiends!

The scenery looks spectacular, so glad you have a safer vehicle now> I thought you would of hired a modern Harry Hines vehicle with the top down. KHS is all go go go with exams, marking and bloody results.
Keep the exercise up as I don't want to see 2 blimps returning to Oz. Love your pics Brenda. Adios, John "Ando"
