Where I stayed
Flew Danang to Ho Chi Minh City, lunch was iced green tea, peanuts and whatever wasn't sold out on the Jetstar plane.
Bussed to Tan Hai Long hotel in district 1 (Saigon), right in the centre of the city. If the road rules were crazy elsewhere, here it's no road rules. Size matters, and the biggest vehicle wins by default. Pedestrians are the bottom of the pecking order.
Room is as we were warned, with no window, BUT on the plus side, the beds are SOFT with feather pillows, and good internet coverage in the room. Other places none, or had to sit on the steps or in the hall to get on the net.
Just had a quick visit to the teeming markets. A few purchases helped along by cloying girls who hold on to you till a deal is done.
Have been warned that bag snatching is a problem in Saigon and yes it happened to a member of our group. Eight of us went out for a drink last night but we didnt walk home together (mistake). Poor Lyn had her shoulder bag snatched by a pillion passenger on one of the many and very close motorbikes. Lost a bit of money but also Amy's camera. Fortunately they had only swapped the memory card earlier in the evening. We will all be just that little more cautious when we return to Saigon on Saturday after our Mekong homestay experience.
