After a nice short stay back at Buzz hostel in Zagreb, I hopped on an early morning bus to Plitvice.. some lakes I had read about in LP and that are world heritige listed (which usually means they are a bit special!). The bus stopped at a nondescript stop halfway between Zagreb and Zadar.. with pine forests around and not much else.
I bought my ticket and started the walk towards the lakes. It was very very foggy so I was a bit dissapointed that the lakes wouldnt look how they do in all the sunny brocures.
I actually heard the sound of water before I saw anything. Walking towards the lakes down the path all you could see was white and the sound of thundering water crashing down from somewhere. Then as you approached the whites of waterfalls became visible through the fog. It was really quite magical, because you couldnt see where the waterfalls were coming from.. only the bright white of the water.
As I got closer I could see the breathtaking sight of crystal clear lakes surrounded by forest of green, gold and red. One lake falls down to another which in turn falls down to another... an amazing series of waterfalls falling through the forest.
The path winds its way across the lakes, along the shore, past waterfalls and amazing vistas, until you reach the boat which silently takes you across one of the larger lakes.
The boats were delayed a bit because of the fog (they were concerned they might crash) but this only added to the magic.. as you would travel across this fog covered lake to see the other shore gradually appear out of nothing.. to see waterfalls become visible through the fog.
The first series of lakes had left me pretty impressed but the second lot literally left made my draw drop. I was walking around just amazed at the sheer beauty.. it felt otherwordly .. and i was dissapointed because the photos I took do not do these amazing lakes justice.
After the complete walk around the lakes and the bus back, I eventually caught the coach onto Zadar, arriving late at night. I found the bus stop and a japanese couple were waiting for the same bus to the hostel somewhere out of town.
The next day I traveled into town, unsure if i would stay another day or head straight to Split that day. I left my bag in luggage and wandered around town. Its a pretty nice little town, with the old medievil and roman parts of town across a little land bridge which is almost like an island. I wandered around the old town for a couple of hours, checked out the ocean organ ( a series of steps which places different notes when different sized waves hit them) .. then headed back to the station to get to Zadar...
