The hotel was grand. Huge room with sofas and 2 double beds but it was so noisy on the street below you may as well be sleeping on the kerb. We decided that alcohol may be the only tonic for sleep later.
Off we went exploring the old quarter, the lake area and all sorts of little backstreets with market and stalls. Some of the markets were selling all sorts of snails, frogs, fish, crab and squid. The smell was overwhelming so we moved on. Although it was 20 degrees out it was very gloomy and the cold feeling wsa welcome for a couple of days to escape the heat further south. The jeans and jumpers were out once more and the mozzies were nowhere to be seen.
We took in a water puppet show one evening to pass some time before dinner and it turned out to be a funnny little show. The music was a bit monotonous but the antics of the water puppets was amusing. We also took in the Ho Chi Minh Museum for one afternoon. I wouldn't dare say a bad word about the man to the locals as it seems they are in complete awe of him. The museum though was a big dissapointment. It just looked like some modern art goof got his hands on the place and made a balls of it. On we went.
On first impressions the people in Vietnam are very friendly and polite. Although it may seem like chaos on the streets you quickly get used to crossing the road between zig zagging mopeds, bikes and cars. Organised chaos one might say. The men and women seemed to be fascinated with Lou though. Almost everywhere we went she got stared at and mostly by the women.
