After deciding it would be better to head straight to the Gulf of Thiland Islands when we arrived in Krabi we then had to take a bus to Surat Thani to get an overnight ferry to Kho Phangang. The ferry consisted of rows of mattresses tightly pressed together on the floor of the boat and we were assigned to be upstairs on this cargo barge makeshifted for people transport. It was fun. After setting off about 11pm most people were fast asleep within the hour and I sat up watching passing transport ships and tankers and trawlers anchored in the gulf. Next morning and after a surprisingly decent sleep for all of us we arrived in Kho Phangang at 6am but after a brief browse around the island we abriptly decided to get on another boat and head for Kho Tao. Nothing wrong with the island but there was only the odd accomodation available and that was being charged at prices way over our budget.

Kho Tao looked immediately nicer and had a lot more charm, similar to Phi Phi, and a lot more reasonably priced rooms. We stayed at Ban's diving resort where one of the pools was jammed with trainee scuba divers most of the day. It turned out Ban's had a restaraunt and a 24 hour shop too. Kinda like small town Ireland where 3 families own the whole town it seemed at first bu on further inspection of the rest of the area we stayed in there was a lot more then just Ban's.

We spent three days here chilling out, snorkelling, drinking and eating well. At night we lazed about on loungers and beach beds enjoying the views of the fire artists (people playing with fire ropes and the like) and the enormous array of colourful lighting and candles along the beach. It was as relaxing as a lavender bath and something I reckon Lou and Carol needed to recharge the batteries a little. At one of the beach bars, late on around 2am, a group of fellas came out onto the beach with ropes and sticks and stuff. The began by swinging and throwing flaming sticks and ropes about like majorettes in a marching band. Then the began playing limbo with a flaming stick with plenty of punters joining in from the bar. And before th night was out people were jumping through flaming hoops and over flaming skipping ropes. Some of them, as Tony put it, using their heads as a brake. Very entertaining.
