We left behind the scenic and sunny Lake Taupo hoping to get some accomodation in Napier for new years eve and some celebrating. On the way and in true Irish style the clouds thickened and darkened and the rain began to fall. It seems a paddy (not you Paddy Butler)can't celebrate anything anywhere in the world without a bit of rain following him or her. So with the rain pouring and the campsites close to town all full up we managed to get accomodation in Napier Prison a brisk 5 minutes walk form the centre of the town. Yep.... a Prison. Our room was in the wardens old block and it had it's own private toilet behind what may as well have been a piece of cardboard for a partition. The door was a heavy lump of metal which creaked and banged and they give you a padlock to lock it up. Signs in the shared showers read "don't drop the soap" and they provided tours of the prison to the general public during the day (not your room). All very unusual but cheap and the bed was really comfy.

That night we hit an Irish pub and treated ourselves to a bit of Pub Grub and lots of drinks before heading to the live gig on the waterfront to await the fireworks. Thankfully the rain had stopped a couple of hours earlier and it was nice and dry out if not a bit chilly. There was a great display of fireworks for a small enough town with a few thousand people on the beach and waterfront all ooooing and aaaahhhhing at each explosion. It must have lasted about 10 minutes altogether. There was a bagpipe band on the street playing some tunes after that and drawing a big crowd of people hanging out of poles and signs. We fell back into another bar and drank until our eyes were nearly shutting before heading back to the Prison.

New years day we woke up and I got news from Mam that old dog Skidoo had passed on. His time was up and he got a fair run of it in the end. He deffo outlasted most dogs on the road leaving behind many young pups (bit of a stud) and was the most lovable little mutt a family could have. R.I.P. Ska.

After another day chilling on the beach we checked out the next morning with a lot of poeple milling around on a large (and seemingly boring) tour of the prison. We got the tour for free by just staying there. Noice.

Wellington next..
