July 19, 2011

Well, I'm (Mary) writing this on July 19th to tell you about July 17 and 18 to try to catch you up on us.  The weather was steamy and so were our brains, but fortunately Kathleen and I took turns losing our abilities to think.  We spent a lot of the 17th getting lost between the motel and our apartment and the motel and Kathleen's mother's house.  (Her name is Joanie to me, so that is how I'll refer to her from now on, OK?)

Our solution to getting lost among three places was to move out of the motel so we would be the Lost Girls of Michigan only between two places.  You'd think that would help with our general confusion, but it didn't really.  We were in for waves of confusion that came back again and again.  Chalk it up to the time difference if you want.

Speaking of the best laid plans of mice and men, remember how I had carefully set up our phone, internet and TV service?  Well they were supposed to install on the 17, but that was a Sunday and the Park Place Apartments' Office were closed, so they cancelled the order. Remember when John, the captain of my shipment, said he would arrive on Monday?  Well, he would not arrive until Wednesday, so we pumped up matresses to sleep on the floor for a more extended stay.

Remember how I had used the online service to carefully place the furniture in the apartment to see how much to bring and how much to get rid of? Well, the floor plan doesn't match the apartment since there is a huge unexpected door on the wall of my bedroom.  So I will have to RECALCULATE.

That reality had us spend yesterday looking for a storage place so when the movers come on Wednesday, we can take what doesn't fit or what we no longer need to storage so we can eventually call Salvation Army to pick it up.  So, to answer Amy's question about why this packing is taking so long, I have to say it is more than packing.  It is planning for a space and a life that has not been totally realized yet.  There is the discarding factor that I did not have in my 40's that I now have in my 60's.  That factor is hard to foresee, and it requires the height of flexibility.  I am not sure I ever mastered that quality, but I'm trying to learn to let go.  There is a huge learning curve to mastering traits that are not part of me yet, but that  is really what I want as a senior citizen.

This is your new home? How did you find this place? Is this an apartment or a senior living facility? It's very pretty here and a really cute town. Not many people around....

No wonder you don't have time for scrabble!
