Madurai is a big city that we only briefly enjoyed. We stayed at a hotel close to the train station, so we could easily make our getaway to Theni. No surprise, it is a big city with lots of traffic and people everywhere. We took refuge in the rooftop restaurants, high above the traffic and noise where we could see the incredible Meenakshi Temple. The photos of the temple were taken from one of them. We explored the temple briefly, but in the temple complex, shoes are removed, and unfortunately the sun heated the ground to a foot burning temperature. It was quite an adventure. We had a sweet exchange with an elephant who would take a rupee from your hand with his trunk and then put his trunk on your head as a blessing. After he would blow out the coin to his handler. Great temple business. People loved it, as I did, but he was a bit of a wet experience.
