Yaurie to Yanque

After a good rest we left Yaurie and headed on the road south towards Chivay. The first thing you notice is the giant open cut Copper mine on the outskirts of town, although not attractive it does provide some much needed employment in the region. It is great to leave it behind as we ride on good gravel roads up over the first pass at about 4800 metres, the scenery here is absolutely stunning, the skies seem to stretch on forever, after descending for what feels like a long time we start to ascend again on potholed, rough gravel, passing only herds of Alpacas and Llamas with the occasional local farmer watching over them. The isolation out here is complete, you feel as though you are totally alone, the landscape so vast and almost empty, but dramatic and inspiring at the same time, what a place.

Finally after climbing to another high pass we started a very steep descent on switchbacks that seem to go on for a long time. Eventually we made it to the town of Sibayo and a good dirt road that follows the river into a steep sided valley past amazing rock formations, then surprisingly we hit bitumen and sweep the last 10 kms into Chivay at a good clip, and then out to our accommodation at Hotel Collahua on the edge of the town of Yanque. A great hotel with little cabins in a big circle. After settling in we all take the 10 km trip into the hot springs of Chivay for a good soak for a couple of hours to wash away the dust and sweat from the days ride. The best scenery yet so far on the ride. What a day!
