When in Rome do as the Romans. It was back in LA when shopping that I realized it was easier to speak like an American where possible. The only way I could make myself understood when phoning around was when I started saying "Hi, can you hear me alright?", pause, let it filter in that I am speaking English. "I am phoning to find out if you have a RIFF rack for a MaaaZda".

When getting directions I no longer think in terms of robots and zebra crossings.

So, when the road signs refer to VISTA points I use this in my everyday speech. That is:
"La, let's take a little walk, find a VISTA point and have our lunch".
"La, I am sure there will be a good VISTA around the next bend"
"No Lara, I have not read anything that Castle Rock offers good VISTAS".
After 3,5 kms, Lara in sandals, the kids tired, she yelled "IT IS A VIEW, NOT A VISTA!" Perhaps there were some other adjectives, it certainly felt like there were. Needless to say, I knew that the next possible VISTA would have to be good enough. And there it was, signs to Castle Rock. Just a short scramble up a steep incline and I was certain that a VISTA would unfold. Good enough, lunch and a little chat with some fellow hikers. Yes, by now I suppose it is right to refer to it as a hike.

Lake Tahoe is the second largest Alpine Lake. I have had this information shared by numerous fellow travelers, though from the Americas. None have been able to answer exactly what Alpine means when they share this incredible stat with me. In my mind, it suggests that the lake is at elevation, does not have any major rivers flowing into it, and hence is mainly fed by snow melt. It is 21 miles long, 70 miles in circumference and the surface temperature is warmer than the Pacific Ocean. As I mentioned previously, I speak American when I can, so for those on the metric system it is 60 percent further than you think. I keep forgetting this when I head out for a ride or walk.
