A couple of hours south of Angra dos Reis (where you get the boat to Ihla Grande) is Paraty, a perfectly preserved colonial coastal town with what can only be described as cobblerock streets. It's a great spot for kayaking as there are over 100 tiny islands right off the coast. Though overcast and subject to the predictions of Pablo the weatherman and hostel owner, we decided to make the best of it and took off for a day’s kayaking with the hang sandwiches and camera firmly tucked into the dry bag.

After a good morning’s kayaking, a hearty lunch, and with the weather starting to turn a bit for the worse, we decided to head for home. 1st leg, around the big island, across the lagoon and through the mangrove stream back into the bay. This stream flowed right through one of the islands, with lovely overhanging trees on each side and these evil looking black crabs scuttering up and down. Not an ideal place to fall out of a kayak. With the stream strongly in our favour due to the prevailing wind my attempt to retrieve the camera from the dry bag, steer the kayak and limbo under an extremely low hanging branch were probably ill advised. An inevitable, painfully slow, backward descent into the water followed. Who knows how the camera survived.

2nd leg, around two more islands and into the bay (in the pissing rain) and we were back, soaked to the bone and happy to be home.
