Having planned to start the trip with a holiday within a holiday for relaxation purposes we headed for Ihla Grande, an island that has no roads, is 98% jungle and arguably Brazil’s most beautiful beach – Lopes Mendes.

Day 2 on the island, after another heavy night (one where the hostel owner went to bed and
actually left us with the key to the bar!), and we decided to head to the beach. Accessible by water taxi (for the princely sum of 6 return), or a 2 hour ‘walk’ through dense, monkey filled jungle, I incomprehensively trudged after Elizabeth, who had the bit very firmly between her teeth on this one.

The language barrier can obviously lead to misunderstandings, however, when three
separate Brazilians try to explain to you that you really shouldn’t ‘walk’ and, as you set out, the hostel owner runs after you to explain that there’s a boat leaving in a minute, alarm bells should be ringing.

3 and a half hours later, after scaling Carrauntoohil twice over, in midday Brazilian
heat, with a limited water supply, without so much as one bloody monkey, on a continuous loop of “you do realise there was a feckin boat to this beach don’t you?!” we did in fact arrive at the promised land.

Side-note:
When you go to the one of the nicest beaches on the planet, on one of the
nicest days of the year, you really shouldn’t delegate the task of bringing the
sun cream to your boyfriend.
