This afternoon I am sitting on my bed in Cuernavaca, a place that is slowly becoming my new home, and I am pondering how my faith will be changed and stretched this next year. I am catching up on the "On Being" podcasts I have waiting for me in my iTunes queue and dreaming about a piece of Finnish squeaky cheese. I am recovering from a cold and contemplating my Spanish language ability. I am thinking about the previous year I spent as a religion major at the University of North Dakota where my brother is currently in his freshman year. I am lamenting about my inability to discuss religion or politics in Spanish, things that I did frequently with my friends back home. I have so many thoughts running through my head that it is difficult to think! But here is what I do know…

I have been in Mexico for three and a half weeks. I have spent two of those weeks in Spanish language school and the rest of the time at an in-country orientation with my fellow Mexico YAGMs. During orientation I was able to visit my work site, DDESER, and meet my coworkers. DDESER is an organization whose objective is "to promote and defend the sexual and reproductive rights of women and young people in Mexico." I am super pumped to be working at the branch in Cuernavaca. Although I won't know my exact responsibilities until I start, it seems like a working environment that will fit me perfectly! (I will probably be able to start after two more weeks of language school!)

Even though I have many thoughts running around in my brain, I am excited to be here. I have been able to give myself a little grace when I can’t communicate with my host family or with the people around me. I remind myself to keep my mind and heart open as I journey through this next year in Mexico and I see what God has in store for me. I am finding my place here, in the city and in my host family. I am growing in relationship with new people I am meeting everyday!
