The bus took us to Prague via Terezin concentration camp which was used for the Czech people and a lot of Jews in the surrounding areas. It was good to see but nothing like Dachau and not as moving. Still, terrible stories and more terrible conditions. It was hard to take it all in as I ended up having the start of what was to be the most hideous migraine I have ever experienced!!! The sun was in my eyes all day, it was hot, I was tired and it just got worse! We arrived in Prague at the busabout hostel out of town only to find out our hostel we booked for our first night was right in town and a long way away from my bed!! We had to get our backpacks on, walk for 10mins to the train station, walk 5 mins to the other side of the station and back again to get the right ticket, then get on a train, then a tram, then walk to our hostel. Urgggh I was slowly dying I was sure of it. To make matters worse we had only booked one bed that night coz we planned to top and tail it, and in my state all I needed was sleep, desperately!! Poor Bern ended up going out and leaving me to sleep from about 6:30pm that night and joined me later at night. I spewed twice throughout the night, and woke about 9, totally refreshed! WTF? Lucky it was just a good sleep I must have needed! Very uneventful evening for my first night in Prague!
Anyway onto the cool stuff. We started our day with a coffee and some breakfast in front of the famous Astrological clock and we watched it go off on the hour during breaky. What a disappointment that was!! It's pretty funny, coz everyone in Prague knows that it is terrible, they even had to add to the show that happens with the crap that comes out of above the clock, but hundreds of people flock there daily to watch it, film it and photograph it. Tick it off, I'll never be back!
We set off to do another free walking tour but ended up going to this one the hostel recommended. We didn't last long with this lady we couldn't even understand. Bern wanted to bail almost straight up but I tried to wait for the most polite time to bail. We joined another one and are SO glad we did. We learnt a lot more with this Canadian tour guide who took us all around. We saw the Jewish quarter, the graveyard, heaps of old buildings, the town halls, Mozart's school and lots of nice things. Prague is really pretty, but I wasn't blown away really. We took in as much as we could and walked around to the Charles Bridge and the John Lennon wall which was fun to do. That wall was disappointing too, it's just a graffiti wall really with not much talent. Not sure what the history is behind that!
We decided on our one available night we needed to check out the nightlife of Prague so we went back to our hostel and got dressed for a night of dancing and drinks. On our way over the Charles Bridge again we met this Aussie guy who lives in Randwick who accompanied us for a while to a bar which was really cool. The music was cranking out of this DJ box with a DJ who looked like he was in his 40's but he shat all over a lot of other DJ's I've heard. We danced for a bit and chatted to this guy but Bern reckons he was a bit keen on me, despite my many mentions of my gorgeous boyfriend Mick, so we bailed on the dude and took off to try and find where the local pub crawl went. As we were wandering the streets, outside this club a guy who worked there tried to get us to go inside since it was a new club, and when we asked how much, he said 10 euros and I laughed in his face and said no thanks, but he ended up letting us in for free and gave us a free drink voucher! ORSM! We raced straight inside and it was a whole church converted into this really cool nightclub!! Once we used our voucher we went straight to the altar - dancefloor and busted some moves. We ran into some guys who were doing the busabout too and took some funny photos doing religious things in the church. hehe it was so funny. We took off then to check out the famous 5 storey club. I know A LOT of people loved this place when they went, and after seeing people shocked when Bern and I say how shit it was, I have come to believe we just went on a shit night, and the fact that we had somewhere as orsm as subbies to go on friday nights means nightclubs have a lot to live up to!! So I will keep the bad rap short.... it was full of the most sleazy guys, drunken 18 year olds, terrible music, dirty sticky surroundings, drunken whores pashing on in the corner with a guys hand down their pants and whatever else it is I have chosen to block out. Bern and I tried to make the most of it but got sick of the sleazy guys cracking on to us and we just called it a night. Glad we went though. TIck it off.
Day 2 in Prague we went to the Bone Church out of town with Luke, Lochy and their two mates who we met the night before and again saw at breakfast. This place was SO far out of town on the train we all thought we were crossing the border to Russia or were going to end up being met by some dodgy Czech guy on the other end to be sold off in an underground market or something super dodgy!! The train ride itself was hilarious with these guys, they were all reeeeally funny. After an hour on the train we finally made it to the town, we got to the first pub and we all cured our hangovers at varying levels with a beer that cost us less than1 euro. Bargain. Next stop was food, so we stopped at the first beer garden we could find and all had schnitzels. I'm addicted, I admit it. The bone church was really creepy and cool at the same time. There was a really wealthy well known family in the area and the church is full of their bones. Again - just check out the pictures for youself. There is one section inside where you can throw coins onto the skulls behind this metal caging, and typical me, the gumby thrower couldn't even get my tiny coin through the giant metal square holes and ended up setting off the "do not touch" alarm. Oops! I know you will laugh at that dad..... that's right, I still can't throw.
We went back to the hostel, swam in the pool, had showers and had a few drinks with busabout people downstairs before heading to this little local bar everyone was raving about. It was the cooooolest little bar I have ever seen!! Check out the photos - it was basically decorated with the coolest random metal artwork, with moving parts and lights and all this crazy cool stuff to make a super unique nightclub. The DJ was up there with the best of them, playing the deepest beats ever, the kind where you feel your heart beat along with the music. We didn't stay long since we had a bus to catch but really loved that place. Such a sneaky hideaway bar, full of cult like, army pant wearing goths on acid, but somewhere I would go again. Yew! Go Prague, we love you.
